Writing GRE is the fiercest nightmare of most students looking to gain admission to pursue graduate studies. This is basically because of the rigors attached to the exam right from registration, down to writing and passing it. One of the questions that get students worked up is writing the same and not knowing exactly when the results are going to show. How long does it take to get GRE test results? If you’ve ever asked this question, don’t worry, you’ll get the answer here. Just do follow me closely.

One of the things you’ll gain from here is that you’ll be in the know of when to look out for your GRE results. It will also help you know when your GRE results will be sent to your school.

Sincerely speaking, one of the moments when you’d be most tense in your entire life is that moment when you are waiting for an exam result to be announced. It’s usually not very easy. The tension is quite high and you’d be wondering what the outcome of the result could be.

But I can tell you, there’s really nothing to worry about if you played your cards well.

Now, let’s discuss, how long really does it take for GRE scores to come out?

Usually, after you’ve written the tests, you’ll receive the first demo scores known as the unofficial scores. This is released immediately on your computer screen. The demo result is not the final official result. It takes a while longer for the official GRE results would be announced or published.

How Long Does It Take to Get GRE Test Results?

It takes a couple of weeks for you to get your official GRE test scores. But before then, immediately after you submit your test, you’ll get like two different unofficial scores which will be for 2 out of the 3 different exam sections. You already remember there are 3 different sections which are comprised of Analytical Writing and Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning.

What is An Unofficial GRE Score?

An unofficial GRE score is the initial GRE score that is displayed or shown to you on the computer screen immediately you finish writing the test. The demo unofficial result is usually shown to you on the PC screen. Usually, the scores released are for Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning and they come within the range of 130 and 170.

Interestingly, the demo unofficial result is not so different from what you’ll get in the official result. This depends on your performance anyway. But if in any way there is a difference, it will surely be a few points apart. This means you can feel confident that the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores you see right after you take the test will be the same as your official scores when it finally comes out.

There is no informal score for Analytical Writing since it must be reviewed by a GRE Expert, not only by an automated computer system.

What is An Official GRE Score?

The official GRE score is the authentic result that is sent to you in your mail by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Usually, you’ll be sent an email stating that your results are ready and can be viewed on your My GRE account.

During this time, you will receive your official scores for Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning all together. This is actually the first time you’ll be viewing your Analytical Reasoning score.

Your official score report will include your final and official scores for each of the three test sections. This will be the first time you’ll see your score for the Analytical Writing section.

The scores report will include your percentile for each score so you can see how well you performed compared to other test takers. It will also show how well or badly you’ve done compared to any previous GREs you’ve taken and the list of schools you’ve chosen to send your scores to.

There is also a feature known as the Diagnostic Service.

The Diagnostic Service is designed to give a description of the types of questions you answered correctly and incorrectly, as well as the difficulty of each question and the time you spent on each question. This information can help you determine your strengths and weaknesses on the GRE, which is especially useful if you choose to retake the exam.

Usually, you can access the GRE Diagnostic Service four days after your official scores become available on the portal, and you can access it up to six months after the date you wrote the exam.

When Will I Get My GRE Test Score If I Took the Paper-Based GRE?

Yes, you’d be asking and wondering what becomes your fate if you wrote the paper-based test. Well, there is not so much to worry about because you’ll get your result too but the big question is, how long is it going to be?

The truth is, if you took the paper and pencil version of the or GRE Subject Test, it will take longer for you to receive your scores. This is hard and sad but it is the fact.

Usually, It takes up to five weeks for you and the schools you requested reports be sent to receive your official test scores.

Like the computer-based GRE, you’ll receive an email telling you to check your My GRE account once the scores are available, and, if you choose to send your score reports after viewing your scores, they’ll arrive at your school about five business days after you’ve sent it.

Please Note: There are no unofficial GRE scores for paper-based GREs.

While the paper version of GRE has the disadvantage of staying longer than the other, it also has the restricted flexibility of allowing you to sit for it less often than the computer-based. It’s also important to know that paper-based GREs and the GRE Subject Tests are only offered three times a year (in September, October, and April).

This means you have much less flexibility in regards to when you can take these tests compared to the computer-based GRE.

When Will My Score Reports Be Sent To My School?

This depends on when you want to send it. You can actually choose to send it immediately after you receive your unofficial scores at the test center. When you choose to send it immediately, you will be allowed to send it to four schools for free but if you choose to send it at a later date, you’ll have to pay $27 per score report. So, the choice is yours to make.

How Soon will Schools Get My GRE Test Scores?

If you choose to send the free score reports at the test center, your schools will receive your official score report at the same time you do, which will be in a couple of weeks. If you choose not to send scores at the test center, you’ll have to wait until you receive your official scores until you can then send your score reports. However, GRE scores are valid for five years, so you can choose to send it at a later date but ensure it doesn’t pass the school’s deadline.
